VAST NEW DEVELOPMENT @ HOLIDAY INN GLASGOW WEST , BOTHWELL STREET The Holiday Inn Glasgow West on Bothwell Street will be demolished next month and two new hotels and a conference centre will take its place. The new hotels include a 300-bedroom 4 star Holiday Inn with a 275-bedroom Express by Holiday adjacent. The two hotels will complement each other and both will serve a dedicated conference centre with a range of facilities including a main room to seat up to 1000 delegates. The project, costing around £100million, will be known as the Bothwell Plaza. Opening dates have not yet been announced Bothwell Plaza is in the heart of Glasgow’s business quarter and a short walk from Glasgow Central station. SOFITEL LONDON HEATHROW TERMINAL 5 One of the largest luxury airport hotels and convention centers in Europe is due to open its doors in March 2008. Conferencing facilities at Sofitel London Heathrow will be capable of accommodating up to 1500 delegates in the largest meeting room or 1000 for banquets, award ceremonies and product launches. An additional 30 meeting rooms will be available with independent foyers allowing various types and sizes of events to occur simultaneously. An in-house audio/visual service, lecture theatre/cinema for 150 people, dedicated offices for organisers as well as a ‘Green Room’ for artistes will establish new industry benchmarks in meetings and events. Link bridges will connect the hotel with Terminal 5, taking guests straight into one of the hotel’s five attractive atriums. In addition, hotel facilities will include a Health Spa incorporating a spa pool, a range of beauty and treatment rooms as well as a state-of-the-art gymnasium and aerobics studio. Extensive underground car parking will be provided. With the completion of the Sofitel London Heathrow T5, and the already opened Sofitel London Gatwick North Terminal (formerly Hilton Gatwick), Sofitel Hotels & Resort will have a total of 1100 bedrooms in the two major London airports. COMMON STAR RATING SCHEME ANNOUNCED A new and overdue star rating scheme for hotels across England, Scotland and Wales is to be introduced next year. The common set of standards for grading accommodation has been thrashed out by respective tourist boards and motoring organisations, the AA and RAC.The new grading is to replace schemes run by each individual body which have long been criticised as being confusing for users. The common standards have been jointly created by all organisations. Following annual assessments starting in January, hotels and guest accommodation will be represented by between one and five stars, with higher rating awarded for improved quality.Accommodation will be split into three categories: Hotel, Guest Accommodation and Budget Hotel, although budget chains will not be star-rated “because of their strong branding”. Hotels will have five sub categories such as Metro Hotel, Country House Hotel, Small Hotel, and Town House Hotel. Guest accommodation has six sub categories, including Bed & Breakfast, Guest House, Farmhouse, Inn and Restaurant with Rooms. In addition to the annual inspections, full overnight assessments will take place every three years, according to the tourist boards and motoring organisations.
